Homology is your bread-and-butter invariant. It provides us with key algebraic data to study 4-manifolds. But who cares about algebra? In this talk we will have a wee look at the geometric side of homology. In particular we will discuss the problem of representing and studying homology classes as surfaces embedded in 4-manifolds.
