In this talk, I will exposit Steenrod's original question of the realizability of homology classes by submanifolds and how it relates to bordism as viewed as an extraordinary cohomology theory. Time permitting, I will sketch the Pontryagin-Thom construction and prove that the oriented cobordism ring is isomorphic to the stable homotopy groups of the Thom spectrum.
