I will discuss a very vague strategy to construct a non sofic group, and then prove the following result in the direction of the first step of this strategy: every non amenable initially subamenable group admits 2 sofic embeddings that are not conjugate by any automorphism of the universal sofic group. The proof surprisingly crucially uses elementary von Neumann algebra theory. This is join work with Ben Hayes.
