SYLLABUS: This is the first part of the prelim algebra sequence. See here. We will cover parts I and II and some of part III of the book. This will include: Groups (groups, subgroups, quotient groups, group actions, direct products, solvable groups) and Rings (rings, domains, PIDs, UFDs, polynomial rings, modules, modules over PIDs).

PREREQUISITES: None, but students who haven't had abstract algebra before are encouraged to talk to the instructor before registering.

EXAMS: A midterm on Friday, October 16th, in class and a comprehensive final exam on Thursday, December 10th, 9:00-12:00 in RLM 9.166.

HOMEWORK: I will assign homework on a weekly basis and it will be due following week, unless otherwise stipulated. No late homework will be accepted. The two lowest homework grades will be dropped.

GRADES: 30% homework + 30% midterm + 40% final.
