  • Math Dept Fall 06 Awards
    Congratulations to R. Kent, K. McKinnie and J. Nolen for winning this year's Frank Gerth III Dissertation Awards. Kudos also goes to T. Blass, S. Butt, K. Hopkins, J. James and R. Schwab for winning this year's Frank Gerth III teaching excellence awards; to E. Carneiro, P. Ivanov and M. Mereb for winning this year's Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence awards; to T. Geldon and G. Hamrick for winning this year's outstanding teaching awards.
  • Trevino Awarded Barrett Scholarship
    Rodrigo Trevino has been awarded the Jennifer T. Barrett Undergraduate Scholarship in Mathematics for his outstanding contributions to research.
  • Ms. R. N. Carroll awarded the Albino Scholarship
    Congratulations to Rachel N. Carroll for being selected as the recipient of the Carmelita Cutro Albino Memorial Endowed Presidential Scholarship.
  • Welcome New Faculty Fall 2006
    The Department of Mathematics would like to welcome all of our new faculty and students. Fourteen new faculty members, Gil Ariel, Maria-Cristina Caputo, Kenneth Chu, Milica Cudina, Louiza Fouli, Anish Ghosh, Alan Haynes Qinian Jin, Aram Karakhanyan, Albert Sato, Henry Wilton, Lexing Ying and Anna Zajacova have joined the department this fall.
  • Distinguished Teacher John Gilbert
    Professor John Gilbert has been selected as a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at the The University of Texas at Austin. Together with Kathy Davis, Bill Guy, Mike Starbird, Jim Daniel and Jim Vick, we have six faculty members in the department with this honorable distinction.
  • Spring 06 Awards
    Nancy Lamm is one of 30 University employees to receive a Staff Excellence award. Patrick Goetz, Carolyn Van Zandt and Suzanne Williams are receiving service awards. Richard Kent, Kelly McKinnie and James Nolen receive Frank Gerth Dissertation awards. Richard Kent and Ben McReynolds are Clay Mathematics Institute Lift-Off Winners.
  • Gardner receives the Steele Prize
    The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has awarded Dr. Clifford S. Gardner, professor emeritus of mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin, the Leroy P. Steele Prize for his seminal contributions to mathematics research.
  • Sloan Fellows: M. Olsson and R. Tsai
    Martin Olsson and Richard Tsai have been selected as recipients of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships. Congratulations to Professor Olsson and Professor Tsai!
  • Actuarial Position Funded by Buck Consultants
    Buck Consultants, one of the worlds leading human resource and benefits consulting firms has funded the position of Buck Consultants Assistant Director of Actuarial Studies at The University of Texas at Austin.
  • Putnam Exam Results
    UT students did extremely well on the last Putnam Exam. Eight scored in double digits, and five of these had their names published in the top 500 nationwide (out of over 3500 contestants). The UT team of Kevin Hughes, Khoa Tran and Chris Milling ranked 22nd among the 395 teams that competed.
  • Treisman: Scientist of the year
    Professor Uri Treisman has been named by the Harvard Foundation as the 2006 Scientist of the Year, for outstanding achievements and contributions to American science.
  • Math Dept Homepage Updated
    After several months of preparation and testing, the new Math Dept home page was launched on Feb. 27, 2006. This update is a complete redesign and reorganization of our departmental website.
  • Substitution Tilings and the Droste Effect
    On Feb 4, Dr Lorenzo Sadun will lead a discussion on 'Substitution Tilings and the Droste Effect' in our first meeting of the 'Saturday Morning Math Group' this semester.
  • To infinity and Beyond
    On Feb 2 at 7pm, Professor Starbird will speak about 'To Infinity and Beyond' In the outreach lecture series hosted by the Environmental Science Institute and the Jackson School of Geosciences.
